A cold beer in summer at Angie's.

Or hot tea with mom in the backyard.

Sharing a coke with dad, watching

the boys shoveling rhythmically,

covering the liquid iron with sand.

I will go back there, I will, go back….

Can I, at least, have someone place

on my tongue a little ice cube

if--

no, when

they finally

remove this cursed breathing tube?
